Vedic astrology (Jyotish) is one of the oldest and most comprehensive systems for understanding human life. At its core is the Kundli — a precise map of the sky at the moment of your birth. This guide explains how to read one, what every component means, and how to use it for self-understanding and life planning.

What is a Kundli?

A Kundli (also called Janam Kundali, birth chart, or horoscope) is a diagram showing the exact positions of the Sun, Moon, and 7 other planets at the time and place of your birth — mapped against the 12 zodiac signs and 12 houses. Each planet, house, and sign combination carries specific meaning about different areas of your life.

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (based on actual star positions) rather than the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology. The Lahiri Ayanamsa correction (~23.8°) is applied to shift from tropical to sidereal positions — which is why your Vedic Sun sign may differ from your Western Sun sign.

The 9 Planets (Navagrahas)

Sun (Surya) — Soul, authority, father, career, vitality
Moon (Chandra) — Mind, emotions, mother, public life, memory
Mars (Mangal) — Energy, courage, property, siblings, ambition
Mercury (Budha) — Intellect, communication, trade, education
Jupiter (Guru) — Wisdom, wealth, children, spirituality, expansion
Venus (Shukra) — Love, beauty, marriage, arts, luxury
Saturn (Shani) — Discipline, karma, longevity, service, delays
Rahu (North Node)— Material desires, foreign, technology, illusion
Ketu (South Node)— Spirituality, past karma, liberation, detachment

The 12 Houses (Bhavas)

The 12 houses represent 12 areas of life. The ascendant (first house) is the most important — it sets the entire chart framework.

1st House — Self, body, personality, appearance
2nd House — Wealth, family, speech, food, values
3rd House — Courage, siblings, short travel, communication
4th House — Mother, home, property, education, happiness
5th House — Intelligence, children, romance, creativity, past karma
6th House — Enemies, health, debts, service, daily routine
7th House — Marriage, partnerships, business, public image
8th House — Transformation, death, inheritance, occult, research
9th House — Dharma, luck, higher education, father, long travel
10th House — Career, status, authority, government, reputation
11th House — Gains, income, social network, elder siblings
12th House — Liberation, foreign lands, expenses, spirituality

North Indian vs South Indian Chart Style

North Indian (Diamond) Style

Houses are fixed in position — house 1 is always at the top-center diamond. Signs rotate based on the ascendant. Widely used in North India, UP, Punjab, Delhi, and Rajasthan.

South Indian (Square Grid) Style

Signs are fixed in position — Aries is always top-second-from-left. Houses move based on the ascendant. Widely used in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala. Both styles show identical information.

How to Read Your Ascendant (Lagna)

The ascendant is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the time of birth. It is the most personal point in your chart — it determines your entire house structure and represents your physical body, personality, and approach to life. Even a 2-minute difference in birth time can change the ascendant degree.

The ascendant is more important than your Sun sign in Vedic astrology. It determines your entire house framework and the rulers of all 12 life areas.

Vimshottari Dasha — The Timing System

Vimshottari Dasha is a 120-year planetary period system based on the Moon's position in one of 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions) at birth. It is used to time major life events.

Planet Years Key themes
Ketu 7 Spirituality, detachment, past karma
Venus 20 Love, wealth, creative success, marriage
Sun 6 Career, authority, recognition, father
Moon 10 Mind, emotions, business, public life
Mars 7 Energy, property, siblings, courage
Rahu 18 Ambition, foreign, technology, desire
Jupiter 16 Wisdom, wealth, children, expansion
Saturn 19 Discipline, hard work, karma, longevity
Mercury 17 Intellect, communication, business, education

The sequence of dashas repeats in this order. Your current dasha is determined by how far the Moon had travelled through its nakshatra at birth. Major life events — marriage, career shifts, health changes, spiritual awakening — are timed against dasha periods.

Understanding Yogas

Yogas are special planetary combinations that give unusually positive or negative results. Some important ones:

  • Gaja-Kesari Yoga — Jupiter in a kendra from Moon. Brings wisdom, fame, and prosperity.
  • Budha-Aditya Yoga — Sun and Mercury in the same sign. Sharp intellect and communication excellence.
  • Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas — Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, or Saturn in own/exalted sign in a kendra. Makes one exceptionally strong in that planet's domain.
  • Viparita Raja Yoga — Lords of 6th, 8th, or 12th in each other's houses. Transforms hardships into eventual success.
  • Dhana Yoga — Lords of 2nd and 11th conjunct or exchanged. Strong wealth accumulation.

How to Use Your Kundli for Life Decisions

Timing major decisions

Use your current and upcoming Mahadasha (major period) and Antardasha (sub-period) as the primary timing guide. Start businesses, marriages, and major investments in favorable dasha periods — particularly Jupiter or Venus Mahadasha for most people.

Career guidance

Look at your 10th house sign and its ruler's placement. The planets in or aspecting the 10th house show career aptitudes. Sun strong in chart = leadership/government. Mercury = communication/IT/finance. Mars = engineering/military/sports. Jupiter = teaching/law/philosophy.

Relationship compatibility

In Vedic astrology, compatibility (Kundli Milan) compares 36 Gunas (points) across 8 categories including Varna (caste), Vashya (dominance), Tara (stars), Yoni (nature), Graha Maitri (planetary friendship), Gana (temperament), Bhakoot (houses), and Nadi (constitution). A score of 18+ is generally considered compatible.
